Sharing the Bouquet

I think it’s natural – after all, when you get a group of people together who are all vying for the top spot as a verifiable “star,” there’s always going to be a little bit of pushing and shoving. It’s kind of like the bridesmaids at a wedding, trying to catch the bridal bouquet.

We all know that catching that bridal bouquet really doesn’t guarantee you’ll be the next one walking down the aisle with your Prince Charming…but it’s definitely a cute ritual. Hopefully there are no black eyes in the process though.

I’ve seen my share of black eyes in the process of catching the proverbial “pornstar” bouquet. There’s this theory that, much like the Highlander, there can be only one. But is that really so? Is it really necessary to kick everyone else down in the process of becoming the one true Star? Can’t you just be a nice person and work with people, rather than cut them down so you’re the one on top? At the end of the day, wouldn’t you rather be amongst co-conspirators rather than be that solitary Shaolin master at the top of the mountain?

I’ve posted this before in the “King of the Hill” analogy. Honestly, I’ve seen more high-quality (and better-netting) product from people that embrace collaboration. When you have more than one or two people involved in the process of creating something, you’re always going to have a better product in the end. Not to keep throwing cliches out there, but a bundle of sticks really does hold up better than a single twig.

The same concept can be applied to any business – and that is a perfect place for social networking to come in. I’ve seen time and time again how social media can allow people to create a better product, through conversation, discussion, and collaboration. People from different walks of life come together, throw some ideas out there, and see what appeals to the group. The end result is a product that is more universally appealing.

You’re going to find that your product is only appealing to a small circle of people, and that your profit margin is going to be minimal. Instead, embrace the collaborative nature of social media – I think you’ll find that through working with like-minded people, sharing the burden of work, and sharing ideas, you can be in a position to share the wealth.

So grab that bouquet if you want – but then remember to share the individual flowers with the people that helped you get the bouquet in the first place – including the one who invited you to the celebration in the first place.
